You need to do this within 28 days of submitting your application. Otherwise we will close it and send you a full refund of your application fee. You would then need to start the application process again.
What documents do I need to send?
You need to email a scanned copy of every document listed below (unless section 6. doesn’t apply):
- [ ] Passport
A clear copy of the photo ID page and the page with your signature on it.
- [ ] Primary medical qualification certificate (PMQ)
A copy of your decorative PMQ certificate given to you when you first qualified. It must confirm the exact date that you met all of the requirements for the award of your degree (the date that you passed your final examination/assessment). If it does not confirm this date you will also need to send a letter from your university with this information. Your qualification must meet the PMQ criteria.
- [ ] Certificate(s) of good standing (CGS)
A CGS from the medical regulatory authority in any countries where you’ve held registration during the last five years. Find out which medical authorities you need to contact. Certificates are only valid for three months and they must be in date when we’re ready to approve your registration. If you’ve asked a medical authority to send a CGS directly to the GMC for you, please let us know.
- [ ] Evidence of your knowledge of English
You must show that you have the necessary knowledge of English to practise in the United Kingdom. See the guidance on English language evidence on our website that we can consider.
- Evidence of completion of an acceptable pattern of experience (you can find out which patterns of experience are acceptable and what evidence you need on our website.)
You must show you have satisfactorily completed either Foundation Year 1 in the UK or a period of clinical experience elsewhere that provides an acceptable foundation for future practice (sometimes known as an internship) as a fully registered and licensed medical practitioner. You can find more information on our website.
Your evidence could be a certificate of completion or a letter from your university or the hospital where you completed your internship. The evidence must include the dates and specialties of all the rotations you undertook. Alternatively you can ask your supervising consultant to complete either of the forms in the links below
Download a blank Evidence of internship form.
Download a blank Evidence of two years postgraduate experience form.
- [ ] Employer references – these are onlyrequired for the following:
- any periods of non-medical work completed within the last five years
- any periods of medical work for which you did not hold registration within the last five years.
Each employer will need to complete an employer reference form in full. Do not complete any sections of the employment reference yourself.
If you’re not sure which references you need to send to us, please ignore this section and we’ll let you know.
- [ ] Translations
You must submit a complete and accurate translation of every document you provide that is not in English.
- A copy of the original document, along with a copy of the English translation.

If you’ve previously sent us any of the documents we’ve asked for, please make a note of this in your email when you send the rest as you may not need to send them again.
How should I send the documents?
Following the guidance below will avoid delays in processing your application:
Please do:
- Reply to this email or to: img@gmc-uk.org.
- Include your name and GMC number clearly in your email (you received your GMC number when you set up your GMC Online account)
- Email the documents as one PDF attachment or as a zip file (in one single bundle rather than individual attachments) in the same order as set out above. The maximum total file size per single email that we can accept is 10MB. Anything over this will not be delivered so if the total is over this size, please break the data up and attach to multiple emails.
- If you do need to email with individual attachments, please name the attachments to clearly indicate the contents of the attachment e.g. ‘PMQ’
- Check that you’ve included all of the documents that we’ve asked for. If there are documents that you cannot send, please explain the reason why in your email.
Please do not:
- Send any documents that we have notrequested above as this could delay your application.
- Send documents by post unless you are unable to email them
What happens next?
- When you’ve sent the documents requested in this email, we’ll assess your application.
- We may still need further evidence/information from you. We’ll contact you to let you know if we need any further from you. We aim to do this within five working days.
- When you’ve sent us all the information required, we’ll give you a decision on your application.
- If we approve your application we’ll ask you to come to our offices for an identity and document check. You’ll be asked to bring the original version of the documents that we have used during your application. You have three months to attend from the point of your invitation.
At peak times of the year (January to February and July to September) we are extremely busy and it can take us longer to assess applications and contact you.
While you’re waiting:
- Make sure that your address and contact details are correct throughout the application process. If they aren’t this may delay to your application. You can amend your address and contact details through your GMC online account.
- You should familiarise yourself with our core guidance Good medical practice.
You do not have registration at this point.
When you have completed the identity check and shown us your original documents, we’ll let you know if your registration is granted. You can check that you are registered on our online register.
Please let us know if you have any questions. We’ll do our best to help.

Sending documents to GMC through email
The next step is replying to the email.
State your name,GMC reference no and attach all the documents in one pdf file.
As I was a very fresh graduate and no employment history besides internship(Housejob) I attached the below mentioned documents only.
I used http://jpg2pdf.com this link to merge all the scan documents into one pdf file and in this order.
1.Scan copy of my 3rd and 4th page of passport which contain my personal data and emergency contact, photograph and other details.
2.Scan copy of my MBBS certificate both front and back page.
3.My final MBBS exam Mark certificate. It was not directly mentioned in the email but they ask for document which carried final exam pass date.My MBBS certificate doesn't carry that pass date but my Mark certificate does.So I attached that.
4.Scan of Good Standing Certificate.
5.Scan of IELTS test report form
6.Both side scan copy of Internship completion certificate
7.Lastly scan copy of a letter from back home Medical and Dental council stating my provisional registration.
I am attaching that letter for you:
Why this letter is needed?
My internship was post graduation. Means after graduating I did the house job(internship).During this time I had provisional registration to carryout my internship. After completing internship I have been awarded full registration. This letter clearly states that fact.
Decision of GMC regarding your application
After 4 days of sending the above mentioned mail they accepted my documents by mail and asked for I'D check
I am copying their mail below :
Your GMC reference number: xxxxxx
Dear Dr xxxx
We have approved your application for full registration with a licence to practise. Before we can grant your registration, you need to book an appointment to come for an identity check at our offices in London or Manchester. We will not be able to see you unless you have pre-booked an appointment. You need to come within three months of the date of this email. If you do not complete an identity check within this time, we will close your application and you will receive a refund, less our scrutiny fee. For further information on our scrutiny fee, please see our fees page.
How do I make an appointment?
You can book and cancel appointments through GMC Online. Appointments are available from Monday to Friday between 9:00am and 3.30pm in the London office and between 9:30am and 3:15pm in the Manchester office.
You should book your appointment as soon as possible. Spaces for appointments are filled very quickly and we can't accommodate unscheduled visits.
You can find maps of our offices and transport information on our website.
What do I need to bring to the identity check?
We need to see the original version of every document listed below. We cannot accept photocopies, certified copies or notarised copies.
- Passport
- Primary medical qualification
- Certificate of internship
- Certificate of good standing from Bangladesh dated 20/08/2017
- Letter from Bangladesh Medical & Dental Council, dated 15/06/2017 regarding your provisional registration dates
What will happen at the identity check?
We will give you a declaration form to sign.
We will check the documents you provide, along with details from your passport. Then we will take a photograph of you for our records, which employers can use to check your identity when you start work. This will also help prevent anyone stealing your identity.
The identity check usually takes 30–40 minutes. If you bring everything we ask you to, your registration and licence to practise will be granted by a member of our team there and then. You can check this on the online register. We will then send your certificate confirming this to the address you registered with us.
If you forget to bring any of the documents we ask for, or if we notice any problems, your registration will not be granted immediately because we will need to investigate further.
We are committed to making ‘reasonable adjustments’ for people with disabilities (in line with the Equality Act 2010). An example of a ‘reasonable adjustment’ is providing information in large print for someone with a visual impairment. Please let us know before your appointment if you need any adjustments and we will do what we can to meet your requirements.
Please let us know if you have any questions. We will do our best to help.
Working in an approved practice setting
Your practice in the UK will be subject to the requirements of our approved practice setting (APS) scheme until your first revalidation. You can find more information on our APS page.
Please let us know if you have any questions. We will do our best to help.
Yours sincerely
Id check booking
ID check booking
It should be done just after returning from the PLAB 2 exam as dates are booked quickly. It can only be done only in London and Manchester office.
It's safe to book a date 15 to 30 days after the result. If you are a fresh graduate and all the documents are ready then booking the date 15 days after result is enough. But if there is lack of all documents or GMC ask for reply from your back home hospital then 30 days should be okay.
For example if exam date is June 1 result publication date is June 29.Then the Id check date should be booked on July 15 for a fresh graduate with all documents. But for a person with complications of documents it should be at least 30 July.
How to book Id check date?
Log into you GMC account
Click on my appointment
Then on New Appointment
Then select Location and appointment type.
